Deaf, Dumb & Blind
By now everyone has read where the American Airlines management team has continued to rattle the saber of doom and gloom if labor doesn’t jump high enough or quick enough when they say “JUMP!”. Funny thing about when someone or some organization makes threats is that usually you have a right to defend yourself. Defending yourself in our situation is paying dues to the TWU.
For eight plus years AA management has dragged their feet in negotiations to squeeze as much out of our pockets through extended concessions before they filed bankruptcy proceedings. The garbage tentative agreement that was brought back was peddled by the TWU and that t/a was riddled with concessions most, if not all, are being asked for in bankruptcy. Wait a second! If I wanted the company’s offer I’d work for Delta! I did say we have a right to defend ourselves so why are people who are “fighting” for us looking at further concessions in order to keep jobs? Didn’t we learn this lesson back in 2003?
A labor’s strength is in their union representation and we at AA in M&E must be deaf, dumb and blind to allow the TWU to continue to “fight” for us. Although humorous I ask that you watch the following video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6FSiaUu0Ww&feature=youtu.be
How can an organization that you pay hard dues to represent you have no accountability for their actions? How much longer can you afford to allow those who DO NOT live under the very contracts they help negotiate to erode your pay and benefits? The time has come to remove the TWU from representing our Craft & Class at AA. Having the TWU International’s structure of democracy is wrong. Having people who do not answer to the members who pay their salaries is wrong. If we do not remove the TWU from representing our Craft & Class at AA we will make ourselves worse than AMTs at Delta and other non-union airlines because at least AMTs at those places will have their pride intact.
